What is today Church @ the Rock is a group of people diverse in cultures, backgrounds, and experiences -- united in the desire to be all that God made them to be.  Together they pursue lives committed to fulfilling His purposes for them.

The foundation which unites them is Jesus Christ, whom they have believed and accepted as personal Savior.  He has freed them from the sins that caused emotional and spiritual bondage, as well as eternal death in their lives.

 
The Story . . .

Church @ the Rock is the newest of several names that this church has been known by.  The church began in the 19th Century during the Second Great Awakening and is the oldest church in the Canarsie, Brooklyn, area.

Twenty years ago, after several difficult years in which the church had struggled and membership had drastically dwindled, a small group of people were left.  Pastor Kenneth Griepp became the pastor of Grace Church at that time, and together with approximately fifteen church members endeavored to begin reaching out anew to the Canarsie community.  In many ways it was a new church, and the small group of people faced significant challenges in many areas.  Yet, they knew that God was about to do a new thing, and a new thing He did!  As they prayed, planned, prepared and purposed to bring the message of Jesus Christ to a community which desperately needed Him, the “new church” grew to over 600 regular attendees as people heard and responded to the message that a Savior loved them, had died for the sin they were unable to do anything about, and offered them the free gift of eternal life.

Through the years, more and more people heard and responded to this message.  As a result, confusion, fear and despair have been replaced by hope and help.  In many cases, hurting relationships have been healed, marriages have been restored, and broken families have been put back together.    Yes, life is hard, but many at Grace Church found that Jesus Christ brought them through very hard times, not only successfully, but also with the ability to glean valuable lessons from the difficulties they had suffered.
